LIKE YOU,
I WANTED MY WORK TO STAND OUT
In the beginning, I thought--"If I build it well I know I'll be successful. Little did I know that only gets you half way.
I've always wanted my work to stand out and was drawn to high end, high design projects from the earliest days of my remodeling career. Being passionate about the trade and craft of building things was the easy part. Building a prestigious and profitable company, doing the kind of high end work I wanted, has taken a lot more effort.
How to build beautiful projects, year after year, without getting ahead.
I didn't have the benefit of a mentor, coach, or a family member in the business when I started. I knew the craft and felt I could pull together the rest as I went along. (I'm shaking my head and grinning as I write this.) If you can imagine a mistake I've probably made it at some point. If you can imagine a stumbling block I probably tripped over it.
Great projects, happy clients, and an uncomfortable truth.
While I built lots of beautiful projects for a lot of really great clients during those early years, I wasn't getting ahead. My reputation and project sizes kept growing. I was busy, and slowly breaking into the high end, high design project market. But after years of slugging it out day after day, I had little to show for it. It was then I came to embrace a very uncomfortable truth.
Your clients don't care, and that's not personal.
They will like you, and may even come to love you because of the transformation you bring to their homes and lives. But it's not their fault if you don't run your company well. Or don't make money on their project. Or burn yourself out from long hours and stress. They aren't in the remodeling business. You are. They aren't responsible for your daily happiness and financial future. You are.
Even after nearly going bankrupt on one of my first whole house projects (for one of the most difficult clients I've ever worked for), I embraced that it was MY decisions and MY choices that led me where I was--it wasn't the clients fault, or my subs fault, my employees, vendors. etc. etc. etc.
Thus, it was in my power to transform the direction of my business and personal life so I could gain the success and prestige I craved as a craftsman and remodeler.
The Power is Yours.
So I got fed up. I got angry and dissatisfied with where I was and went looking for answers everywhere I could: Online forums, trade shows, conferences, association meetings, networking events, round tables, college courses... you get the idea.
Sometimes the tidbits and solutions I found most helpful came during informal conversations at a bar or restaurant AFTER an event was over. If you've ever spent time at a trade show or conference, I'm sure you can relate. (I owe a debt of gratitude I can never repay to the countless colleagues who have shared their time and insights with me over the years!)
The Secrets? There were lots of them.
The systems, strategies, and tactics I use today were developed from that search and over the course of the hundreds of projects I've had the good fortune to work on these past 30+ years--the last 22 of those in my own company, WrightWorks LLC.
For all journeys, there's the long way.
Unlike our predecessors in decades past, the modern remodeling business owner carries around in their pocket access to more information and experience than any of us could otherwise encounter in ten lifetimes. Having the time to sift through it all to find the good stuff is our biggest challenge. That, and staying focused while navigating the sea of distractions that will pull you off course and off track from achieving your long term goals.
It doesn't have to be that way for you.
There isn't a formal Apprentice - Journeyman - Master path to success in the business of high end remodeling. While there are certainly programs for individual trades, and a plethora of general business and entrepreneurship content, I never had the benefit of a program specifically tailored to the kind of work I wanted to become successful at. I had to pull it all together over many years while making countless missteps and mistakes. You shouldn't have to take that harder path.
That's the motivation and reason for Elevated Remodeler.
I want to help you as an established Remodeler or Craftsman gain greater prestige and financial success by attracting, developing, and converting more high-end projects--in a way that leads to LESS stress and MORE personal freedom.
If that's the kind of work you do, or want to do more of, I'm glad you made it here. I look forward to helping you.

Before he became known for his jaw-dropping craftsmanship, Christopher Wright was a Fortune 500 manager, martial arts teacher, and jack-of-all construction trades. “...I got exposed to these old houses, and fell in love with them,” he says. Around the same time, he formed WrightWorks... and met a designer with whom he has since collaborated on hundreds of projects, many of them in Indianapolis’ historic Meridian-Kessler
neighborhood.
